How To Create A Positive Professional Image

October 8, 2015 | Fonthip Ward

It's important to keep track of who is hanging around you in LinkedIn.

You have the ability to change people’s perception of you. A professional image is essential to having a successful career, regardless of what profession you are in. Below is a list of things that you will need to do to create a professional image:

Look The Part

You can maintain a positive professional image by wearing the appropriate attire. First impressions are important, and people will be able to get the right first impression if you dress appropriately. The attire that you should wear is dependent upon the profession you are in. Look at other people who are in a similar profession as yours and obverse how they dress. This will help you select the right attire for your profession.

Be With The Right People

You can maintain your professional image by hanging around the right people. On the other hand, the wrong company can tarnish your image. That is why it is important for you to watch who you hang around both in and out of the office.

Make Sure Your E-Life Is Clean

The Internet is a wonderful thing that has many uses. However, many people have had their image and reputation ruined by something that was posted online. That is why you will need to regularly search your name on the Internet and make sure that there are no negative posts about you. If you find a negative post, then you should try to get it removed as soon as possible.

Furthermore, you should watch what you post on your social networking sites. Posting information about your personal life on a social networking website can be damaging to your reputation. Use the appropriate privacy settings.

Under Promise And Over Deliver

Many business people make the mistake of making promises that they are unable to keep. Instead promising your customers things that you may not be able to keep, you should be realistic. It is much better to set the bar low and exceed your customer’s expectations than it is to over promise and under-deliver.

Keep Your Personal Life To Yourself

You may have a lot of things going on in your personal life, but you should try not to let it affect your professional image. Things like debt, family problems and a bad weekend are examples of things that should not be discussed while you are working. Keeping your personal and professional life separate will help protect your image.
