How To Use Google Analytics and Search Console Data To Improve Your Blog

March 18, 2016 | Sorcha Mullis

The more you know about the demographics and interests of your audience, the more you will learn about their behaviour on your website. Google’s range of tools provides an expansive catalogue of data so you can better identify these trends. That way, you can direct your marketing or write the blog posts that appeals to your audience.

Expanding on Most Linked and Highest Traffic Content

To get more traffic to your blog, you want to create content that is based on previous posts that have been popular.

In the Behaviour tab, click on Site Content and then All Pages. A report will be generated showing your content and the total amount of views your content has received. You can adjust the timeframe by using the Calendar or Date Boxes at the top right of the page.

Google Analytics all pages

Once you have discovered your most popular content you can write new blog posts on the same topics by writing more in-depth posts or by repurposing the content into a different format. For example you could turn a 1000 word blog post into an infographic or embedded YouTube video.

Bounce Rates

If you notice people are leaving your website shortly after visiting an article, there could be problems with the quality of the content. You can reduce bounce rate on your website by rewriting underperforming content to better appeal to your readers and encourage them to remain on a page longer. Engagement elements such as infographics, videos and quizzes also help to capture attention for longer.

Internal Linking

Internal linking is the process of connecting your website pages to other content on your website and it’s great for boosting the experience of your users. Done correctly, internal linking helps your visitors navigate your website and helps boost your SEO.

The more content you have on your website, the more internal links you can build. The most important thing to remember when you link to content on your website is to only link to the pages that are relevant to the content on the page you are linking from and will really offer readers more in-depth or useful information.

Mobile Friendly

Mobile friendly means your website displays on all devices in a way that is easy to read with no device-related errors. Being mobile friendly is important as a lot of potential customers may access your content on their mobile device.

Google Search Console (formerly Webmaster Tools) crawls your entire site and can give you a page-by-page breakdown of which pages are not mobile friendly. It also gives exact details of the issues which you can give to your developer to fix.
