Every business has a variety of Intellectual Property (IP) which is essential to its success and it is the business owner's responsibility to put in place strategies and procedures to protect their IP. If you are not sure about your IP and if it is protected, if you haven't trade marked your business name, logo etc, then you need to bring yourself up to speed on your rights and responsibilities in this area. Education and awareness of all aspects of business ensure success. There are a number of practical and strategic decisions a business owner can make to protect their branding. Over lunch Lucy Meadley, a Trade Marks expert, will explain exactly what steps are required to ensure your branding is adequately covered. She started her career working at a boutique intellectual property firm in London and has spent the past five years working at top tier firms in Sydney, including Allens Arthur Robinson and Mallesons Stephen Jaques. Lucy has worked with some of the world's major brands, such as GUINNESS, JOHNNY WALKER, GOOGLE, RED BULL, FOXTEL and 20th CENTURY FOX. Most businesses invest a significant amount of time and money establishing a brand to differentiate themselves from their competitors. Unfortunately, these same businesses often forget the importance of protecting the very branding they have created. There is nothing more annoying and frustrating than finding that your branding has been copied - but basically, unless as a business owner you have taken the legal steps to protect your branding, you won't have a leg to stand on.
