5 Reasons why Better Sleep means Better Business Health. Part One!

In this three part series, Anne Noonan will share 5 key tips to get a better night’s sleep along with the reasons why sleep is one of the key elements to better health, better business production and disease prevention.

Our tissues, body systems, health and organs improve when we exercise.   In fact, there’s not a disease or illness known that doesn’t benefit with exercise. But did you know our body receives the same level of benefit from getting sufficient sleep?

Neuroscientist, best selling author and sleep expert Matt Walker in his book ‘Why we Sleep’ says ‘Is there any tissue or organ in the body that doesn’t benefit from sleep?   The answer is No!’

Lack of Sleep and Weight Gain.

Studies have shown that lack of sleep can lead to diseases like Alzheimers, Heart Disease and Diabetes.   It also leads to Weight Gain.   In my experience, I learned my cortisol levels and melatonin production at night went haywire as I’d spend many hours awake.   In turn, anxiety levels lift and exhaustion sets in by the time the alarm goes off.   Our body goes into survival mode and muscle, rather than fat, is broken down.   The body reads our lack of sleep as needing to gather up our fat stores and so weightloss becomes difficult and diets useless.    When we’re sleep deprived even exercise is less than effective.

Matt says ‘every disease in the developing world is linked to a lack of sleep including Cancer, Diabetes, Alzheimers, Stroke, Depression and Cardiovascular disease’.   As a nation we are sleep deprived which effects productivity.

How can we get a better night’s sleep?

Here are 2 ways I’ve  found improves my quality of sleep.

  1. Have a sleep schedule.   I try to not go to bed later than 10pm, preferably by 9pm so that I can wake up refreshed by 6.30 or 7am.   When I get that ‘second wind’ by 11pm my cortisol levels are starting to lift again and my sleep quality is effected.
  2. Have a cool dark room.   Our body sleeps so much better in a cooler temperature than in a hot room.   I prefer a fan blowing or natural air rather than an airconditioner.
