Mandy Cann | Director | Mandy Cann Consulting

Mandy Cann Mandy Cann ConsultingTell us about your business:

I started my own HR/IR consulting business in October 2008 when I was on maternity leave from a government job. It was in my 5 year plan to start the business, however, I brought it forward by a couple of years as I needed a challenge in my life. Going back to my government job part time wouldn't give me the satisfaction I was looking for after giving birth and looking after a baby. That was actually the biggest challenge of all and the most rewarding.

What's been your most outstanding career/business achievement?

Since commencing my consulting business I have undertaken a number of projects within organisations to improve how they remunerate, manage and reward staff. Satisfaction is achieved when I can see direct results of improvement for both the business owners and the staff. On a personal note I have a 2 year old daughter Sophie, she is a very spirited and a busy little girl and I love spending quality time with her. I have assisted her day care centre in retaining and managing their quality staff in order to provide high quality learning and development for the children.

What are your top 3 networking tips?

n Have a plan in your mind when attending networking functions.
n Follow up contacts within a reasonable time period, don't leave it too late.
n Listen more than talk when meeting a new potential client, don't go the hard sell.

What's been your most successful marketing or career progression strategy?

Know what you are worth and stick to it. When starting in the consulting game it is tempting to undercut your competitors, however, you need to price yourself appropriately within the market.

What can't you live without?

My lipstick, if I don't have it on when I leave the house my daily mojo is affected!

What value and benefit have you or your business gained by being a WNA Member?
