Ebru was only one year old when her parents migrated to Australia from Turkey. She was raised as a muslim in a conservative, cultural home. Family violence was a regular event growing up for Ebru. Her first marriage at the age of 16 was arranged and Ebru imported a husband from Turkey.
By the age of 21, when girls her age were going to birthday parties, she was a divorced single mum and damaged goods – disowned by her family and shut out of the only tribe that Ebru knew.
Ebru was one of the very few Turkish women in the migrant community that attempted and survived divorce 32 years ago.
Ebru states “Whether it is an arranged marriage, family violence or just plain ignorance, building resilience to face our challenges can be daunting to take action. More often than not, we hold captive the people who have hurt us, in the dark dungeons of our mind not realising that every captive needs a guardian. Unshackling the captive and setting them free from our dungeon is freedom for our own mind, body and soul, and this is true.”
