How To Set SMART Goals
Are you achieving what you want out of life, love, business and relationships?
There is much research around achieving goals and how to do so, with a specific emphasis on following the SMART goals format and sticking to deadlines to achieve what you need to.
Yet so many of us want to achieve things in life, but often don’t. So why is that? What stops us?
- Confidence and Self-Belief
- Mental Illness
- Low Self-Esteem
- Limiting thoughts (I will never be able to achieve that…..)
If you don’t do anything, you won’t achieve anything.
Fear is a very motivating or debilitating factor that often stops us from doing or achieving those things we want to. Many women are unsure how to proceed or achieve their goals, and so don’t. So they procrastinate, or believe they will get around to doing something about the issue later, when there is ‘more time’ which of course, there seldom is.
What is the importance of setting Goals?
Studies done over the last 15 years indicate that achieving goals bring many additional advantages with them – including living longer, being wealthier, being happier in relationships and enjoying better health.
Like using a Roadmap (or more commonly now a SMART phone, tablet or GPS) goals:
- provide clarity;
- give direction for the future;
- provide a sense of purpose and vision;
- provide a sense of achievement;
- give an individual ‘chunkable’ tasks to perform over time and;
- reduce a sense of being overwhelmed and pressurised.
Next, outline what, when, how, where, who and how you will evaluate your success. Keep revising your goals every six months and vigorously assess if you have achieved them.
Go out and focus on what you want to do with your life. What you want to achieve. Then do whatever it takes, including having clear goals, to get to where you want to go, no matter what that is.
