How to Create a Social Enterprise
Jo Cordell-Cooper - Director, Tasmanian Iconic Walks
In late 2016 Jo pondered what to do with a large amount of money – should it come her way.
Jo wanted to set up a team hiking event with a fundraising component that would draw people to Tasmania. The event would draw participants to walk one of the stunning wilderness long day walks, the local and tourist attraction. The chosen charity is the Stroke Foundation which Jo is passionate about. Having experienced it first hand, her father survived a stroke, but his quality of life was poor for four years before passing away.
Jo faced many challenges, the first being to set up a Volunteer Board with a cross mix of members. Ongoing support from local businesses, the legalities with permits and insurances, the list went on with lessons learnt along the way. One being to set it up as a “not for profit” organisation.
About Jo Cordell-Cooper:
Jo founded Tasmanian Iconic Walks and combined her two loves – developing the fitness of others (her paid work) and her personal desire to walk over each and every hill on this planet (her passion).
Jos’ first experience of a stroke was when her father suffered one in 1999. Previously he had been a very fit and healthy man. He loved the outdoors. After two years of rehabilitation, her dad was almost back to his old stuff – not quite the same but he was back to living an independent life.
Then his second stroke struck. He never returned to the life he knew. He lived in a nursing home as the family struggled to come to terms with the man they once knew. Hence the question “what would Jo do if she received a whole load of money”.
What you will learn in this session:
- Relationships are everything
- Surround yourself with diverse can do people
- Heart will only get you so far - be prepared to work hard
- Don't let your lack of skill in a particular area scare you off ACTION.
