Start with the end in mind
We all know the theory that having a big, over arching business goal by which to guide our actions is the key to success. But what happens if we struggle to stick to our goals? Or have no idea where to start?
We all know the theory that having a big, over arching business goal by which to guide our actions is the key to success. But what happens if we struggle to stick to our goals? Or have no idea where to start? What if we know we want to be doing something different, but don’t know how to change things?
If you have ever read the Stephen Covey book “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People” you will know that habit #2 is to begin with the end in mind. If there is something that all high achievers have in common, it is the fact that they are consciously creating the life they are living; rather than becoming the creation of their life.
For us to even have a hope of setting goals we are motivated to stick to and creating the business of our dreams, we need to be able to articulate those dreams. We need to start with the end in mind; we need to know what our life and our business will look like after we are successful.
So, whether you’re considering starting a business; have recently started a business or are at a turning point in your business and are overwhelmed with where to turn next…stop. Just stop, give yourself a moment and read on to learn the steps we need to take to create the business and the life we know we are worthy of:
Grab a notebook or journal, pen and a cuppa (or glass of wine!!);
Take yourself somewhere quiet where you won’t be disturbed;
Start to write…
…start to write about what your ideal average day would look like if you were doing exactly what you want to be doing. I’m not talking about lounging on the beach drinking cocktails all day either; for whilst this might be a part of your ideal future lifestyle, it wouldn’t form part of your average day; it would be a treat!
Write from the heart. Don’t let your head limit your possibilities by being practical; in this exercise, anything goes.
Where do you live? What time do you get up? How do you spend your morning? Who do you socialise with? What do you talk about? What does your life look like? How do people perceive you?
By fully articulating what we want out of each day, we begin to activate the neural pathways in our brain to figure out ways to achieve it. Many of us are very good at saying what we don’t want, but not so good at saying what we want instead and there is a saying that if we cannot language it, we cannot have it.
So if you are thinking of starting a business or making a career change, or if you have a business but feel the need for an energy reboot, start by languaging what your ideal average day looks like and you will be surprised with the options you begin to notice once you open yourself up to new opportunities!
