Tech That Gets You Fit – quick, easy and free options

What do you need to get moving? Do you need a personal trainer, gym membership or just a pair of shoes?  If you are time poor, as most business women are, use these free apps  to get running. 

Running is a great stress reliever and quite a time efficient workout also.  The break from work and get your heart rate up – this is going to make for a more focused and productive work day so aim to get your workout in before the end of the workday.  You’ll notice how much your concentration improves.  With as little as 3 x 30 minutes a week you can learn to run for fun – or something more serious. 

These apps will get you there:

Couch to 5K – If you’ve wanted to try running but never known where to start, Couch to 5K should be the next app you download. The free eight-week program offers beginner to more advanced workouts.  You decide which workout week you should start at and take it from there.  You’ll get three workouts per week that get you ready for a fun run or a more serious race.

ZombiesRun – This one offers a slightly different take on running apps with different ‘missions’ to complete as you run faster than the zombies.  You can add your own music to the process to make a unique workout every time. 

MapMyRun –  This GPS exercise recorder is highly accurate and can give you information such as distance covered, the actual route, time, average speed, and calories burned.  This information can be stored for comparison at a later date. 

Want to test yourself in a non competitive way?  Visit and see what free runs are available in your area.  Parkrun organise free, weekly, 5km timed runs not just in Australia but all around the world.  They are open to everyone, free, and are safe and easy to take part in.  They issue you with a barcode and you scan this at the start and finish of the event and your times are collected and you can see how you are going against yourself over time, or others in your age groups.

So don’t over think exercise commitment – get away from your desk just 3 times a week and you’ll be amazed how easily you improve.  Relieve stress and return to the desk focused and energised.  You’ll be more productive for sure.
