The Subtle Art of Giving

Health & Wellbeing
“You really must give, in order to receive”. “I need to pay it forward”. We’ve all heard statements like these at some point, but how do we give, without undervaluing our self-worth or giving too much of ourselves away?

Let me introduce the 7 Natural Laws and how you can respark harmony and positive flow in your favour.

These principles explain the regularities and phenomena of how the universe works and operate – whether we believe in them or not.

Perhaps (unbelievably) you can combine 5 of these through the following philosophical approach to giving.

Natural Law of Cause and Effect – every action has an impact

Natural Law of Gender and Gestation – what is sown, will grow

Natural Law of Rhythm –life ebbs and flows, flexibility is required

Natural Law of Polarity – the balance of opposites

Natural Law of Attraction– energy attract similar energy

Just in case you’re curious, the other 2 natural laws are

Relativity – comparisons are required to have perspective, however there is no right or wrong

The last law is Perpetual Energy, nothing dies, energy is constantly transmuting into new forms.

In order to incorporate those first five laws in the context of ‘giving back’ we first need to learn the difference between doing and giving.

Doing versus Giving

The act of doing anything whether for yourself or another is for the purpose of an achievement.

If you’re a constant doer, there could be also cause to think that you are in the hope of being appreciated.

Giving is a free gesture; it’s a voluntary action without the need for an outcome.

If your ‘giving’ is draining you, you could have a subtle subconscious resistance within you. An inward hope that you will receive something in return, rather than trusting in the three universal laws of rhythm, cause and effect and attraction.

Furthermore, you can’t give what you don’t have.  If you want to give away physical things such as a copy of your book or free samples you must believe that there is enough left behind, or that it can be replaced in a harmonious fashion.

If you don’t, that thing you ‘gave away’, will be tied to you energetically and distract or hold you back until it has been replenished to a manner that you feel comfortable with.

You should note that the act of giving cannot be complete without the opposite energy of receiving.

The flip side: Taking versus Receiving

 To really understand giving

we need to learn, the art of receiving.

Taking is generally to receive and have possession of.  We can also have an attachment to a specific outcome, or even have an agenda of it.

Receiving is to be presented with or be given something. It requires us to open up to trust the givers intentions and be gracious.

Why does receiving make most of us feel uncomfortable?

Many cannot respond to receiving something with pure joy or thankfulness.

Some receivers

  • can feel guilty and/or inadequate
  • can have a sense of debt

The result of an incomplete give/receive exchange?

  • feels disappointed or ‘out of energetic exchange’
  • true intentions can be misunderstood and future kindness can be shut down
  • feel the need for more frequent / grander gestures

Giving or receiving alone – will eventually lead to misery!

But wait there is hope!

As Budhha quotes

before giving, the mind of the giver is happy;

while giving, the mind of the giver is made peaceful;

and having given, the mind of the giver is uplifted.

Karma can’t be tricked

Please be aware that if your intention of giving, is purely to get ahead or to gain some advantage then the intention you are setting, is going to trigger the law of vibration… in the wrong direction.

Equally if you give, purely for the joy of seeing another benefit from your action then the law of perpetual energy will kick in transferring that energy of kindness back towards you.

Always act with positive intention

Both sides benefit tremendously when we give with authentic, congruent intentions and receive with grace.

Both parties can feel a deep sense of connection to the other party, to society, to their cause, even to the universe with the ability to see how the laws are working with them.

The more consciously aware you are of the natural laws, the easier and quicker they start to vibrate in your favour.

Your relationships will benefit whether you are a receiver – you will feel understood and valued – or as the giver feeling balanced and fulfilled.
